Accies Young Guns got their 2016/17 season preparation underway tonight, and by all accounts thoroughly enjoyed their return to training. A decent turnout, allowing for holidays, saw the boys reintroduced to their coaching and management team of Murray Galloway, head coach, Andrew Duncan, assistant and specialist skills coach, and Andy Lee, team manager, logistics and procurement, and all round good guy.
We had a bit of fun indoors, to break the ice, then it was outside for a fitness test, which allowed the boys who have been working hard at senior preseason to show off their impressive conditioning gains. Everyone performed well, and we will no doubt revisit this throughout our prep, and see what gains can be made. 2XV captain Bushy Wilson, who came down expecting senior training, led the boys home, showing his impressive marathon – honed fitness, although some were hot on his heels!
Next, we started the games part of the evening, and set Backs against Forwards for a Pressup and Situp Challenge, narrowly taken by the forwards. Then a water transfer relay race, which the safe hands of the Backs, under the management of Bushy, comfortably won.
All square, the mental, physical and co-operative test of transporting their basins of water around the pitches, saw our Backs yet again comfortable winners on the night.
After catching their collective breath, a fast paced game of Touch Rugby saw the boys prove they have lost none of their appetite for the Game, and some top drawer skills and game awareness were clear to see.
Thoroughly exhausted, the boys headed indoors, and listened intently as Andy Lee outlined team policy, driving home the importance of time management, consistently training, dress code, membership renewals, as well as lifestyle choices, which will impact and influence individual and team performance. Andy Duncan was able to outline how Senior and U18 training sessions will dovetail together, allowing both squads to train with competition, and how the boys can benefit from shadowing seniors.
A feast of pizza, garlic bread, and Birthday cupcakes to celebrate Andy Duncan’s birthday rounded off the night, and the boys left with an excited buzz, renewing friendships and the whole thing finished well, complimentary comments given to the Cairns family for catering the evening.
Training will now continue on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6pm, with preseason friendlies being arranged, so spread the word…. The Boys are Back!!
See you at training!!
